The CrossFit Open Is Over - What Now?

workout one in-house scorecard.
workout one in-house scorecard.

Three weeks. Three workouts. And that particular flavour of suffering that only CrossFit can deliver quite so efficiently. Just like that - the 2026 Open is done.

Every year, I find myself sitting with a quiet appreciation for what the Open actually is - not just a competition, but a tool. A mirror. A line in the sand.

What Your CrossFit Open 2026 Score Actually Tells You

The Open doesn’t care what you think your fitness is. It just shows you. And for some of you, this year confirmed that the training is working, movements that once felt impossible are now just hard, weights that used to be a PR are now a warm-up.

For others, it surfaced something worth paying attention to - a gap, a movement you’ve been quietly avoiding. That’s not a bad thing. That’s exactly what a good test is supposed to do.

And if you’ve been around long enough to have a few Opens in the bank - go back and look at your scores from year one. That progression, however messy or full of life’s detours, is yours. Over time, the Open becomes something like a journal.

What We’re Building Here

The CrossFit L1 Training Guide describes fitness as “increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains” and uses what it calls the “hopper model” to illustrate it. Imagine every possible physical task life might throw at you loaded into a hopper. The fittest person is the one best prepared for a randomly drawn task. Not the specialist, the generalist.

That’s what we’re quietly building every session here at Hypha CrossFit Wellington. The Open tests exactly that kind of broad readiness. And it turns out, so does life.

The Next 12 Months Are Yours

The fitness you’ve built isn’t just for three weeks in March. Maybe this is the year you run a marathon, give Hyrox a go, or enter a local CrossFit event - just to see how it feels outside familiar walls. Or maybe the goal is simpler and just as worthwhile - healthy knees, lifting your kids over your head without a second thought, carrying all the groceries in one trip. These aren’t small things. They’re exactly the reasons we’re here.

The 2027 Open will come around faster than you expect. The best preparation isn’t a plan written in January, it’s the quiet consistency between now and then.

Rest. Reflect. Then come in on Monday.

Ngā mihi,

John
